Commission on Education

Mission Statement of the Commission on Education

The Commission on Education seeks to promote and maintain quality standards in education of the profession, to address matters related to prequalification and post qualification education of speech and language therapists in Europe and to relate to speech and language therapy in the global context. It will seek to facilitate academic and professional recognition of speech and language therapists across Europe.

Aims and Objectives of the Commission on Education

  • The Education Commission’s primary aim is to promote and maintain quality standards in education of speech and language therapists at both prequalification, at an appropriately advanced level for entry to the profession, and post qualification levels in Europe.

  • The Commission aims to disseminate and share information on best
practice and innovation in Education of the profession.

  • The Commission aims to facilitate academic and professional recognition of speech and language therapists across Europe and to relate to the global context of speech and language therapy.

To achieve these aims the Commission has the following objectives:
  • The Commission through CPLOL Executive Committee will  work with and seek to influence European authorities as appropriate in relation to education of speech and language therapists and their mobility across Europe, particularly in light of relevant EU directives, the Joint Quality Initiative for quality assurance and accreditation of bachelor and master programmes in Europe, and the Bologna Declaration (1999) in which Europe committed to adopt a higher education system essentially based on two main cycles; Bachelors and Masters.

  • The Commission therefore seeks to address the implications of the Bologna Declaration and those of the follow-up Prague communiqué (2001) which state

    • to co-operate in quality assurance

    • to collaborate in establishing a common framework of reference

    • to disseminate best practice

and through its working groups and the Recognition committee if required to

  • to design scenarios for mutual acceptance of evaluation and accreditation/certification mechanisms

Thus the Commission’s current objectives are

  • to keep and update data on the nature of prequalification courses, numbers of students and graduates in speech and language therapy

  • to address the relation between competences and learning outcomes and minimum standards for speech and language therapists using descriptions of competences and of learning outcomes, taking account of  the  European Qualifications Framework (EQF)

  • to address, in collaboration with international colleagues, the International challenge to Speech and language therapists to develop common terminology frameworks

  • to collect information on the role of Continuing Professional Development in relation to Speech and Language Therapy education and practice across Europe
